Last June 15, 2020, WR Numero Research, in collaboration with the School of Law and Governance of the University of Asia and the Pacific, the Department of Anthropology of the University of the Philippines, and the Chinese Studies Program of the Ateneo de Manila University, held a webinar entitled “Probing the Levels of Filipino Political Support for China”. The activity was attended by individuals from governments, academe, and the private sector.
Following this virtual dialogue, Business World interviewed WRN CEO Dr. Robin Michael Garcia, who was also one of the speakers, to further shed light on the results of WRN’s study on Filipino political support towards China.
In the interview, Dr. Garcia explained how the administration’s pro-China policy and its COVID-19 response have become Duterte’s “Achilles’ heel” in spite of the President’s populist and strongman image.
“If he’s not able to stand up against these issues, which is also the reason why he was elected in the first place, then this whole image of strongman will be absent,” Dr. Garcia said. He also emphasized how these issues could hurt the chance of administration bets in the coming 2022 national elections.
